DLDP and DIPD Conduct Fact-Finding Mission in Ukraine

DLDP and Partners Conduct Fact-Finding Mission in Ukraine

Representatives from the Danish Liberal Democracy Programme (DLDP), Venstre, the Danish Institute for Parties and Democracy (DIPD), and several partner political parties recently conducted a fact-finding mission to Ukraine to explore potential collaborations and assess the conditions for supporting democratic initiatives in the country.

The delegation spent several days in Kyiv and surrounding regions, meeting with local political parties, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to gain firsthand insight into the political landscape and the opportunities and challenges facing democracy in Ukraine.

Exploring Opportunities for Cooperation
The mission was designed to identify potential partners with shared values and objectives in strengthening democratic institutions and political participation. Delegates engaged in in-depth discussions with party leaders, youth organisations, and local experts to better understand the needs and priorities for democratic development in the current context.

“Ukraine’s democratic landscape is dynamic and complex,” said Bent, Programme manager of DLDP. “Our goal was to see how we can offer meaningful support, foster dialogue, and create sustainable partnerships that strengthen democratic processes at both local and national levels.”

Assessing the Operating Environment
A key part of the mission was to assess the conditions for operating safely and effectively in Ukraine. Delegates visited municipal offices, civic hubs, and educational institutions to observe how political actors and citizens interact, and to understand the challenges of promoting democratic participation in a rapidly changing environment.

“The resilience and dedication of Ukrainian civil society and political actors is inspiring,” said Eva Kjer Hansen “At the same time, there are clear challenges, including navigating political fragmentation and ensuring access to inclusive participation. Understanding these realities is essential for planning effective cooperation.”

Engaging with Political Youth and Emerging Leaders
Youth participation was a particular focus of the mission. The delegation met with young political leaders and youth wings of political parties to explore opportunities for capacity building, mentorship, and exchange programs. These discussions highlighted the importance of empowering the next generation of political actors to actively contribute to democratic governance.

Next Steps
Following the fact-finding mission, DLDP and its partners will evaluate the findings and explore concrete opportunities for collaboration. Potential activities may include workshops, study visits, joint initiatives with local political parties, and support for dialogue and political education programs.
